IRAP TherapyIRAP therapy is designed to block the excessive production of an inflammatory mediator (interleukin-1) in joints affected by arthritis. Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease (DJD) is a significant source of lameness in performance horses. During osteoarthritis, Like PRP, IRAP therapy simply requires a sample of blood from the affected horse. The blood is incubated in a special syringe for twenty-four hours. After incubation, the blood has produced substances that encourage healing, such as growth factors and anti-inflammatory molecules. The blood sample is then centrifuged to separate the red cells from the serum containing these beneficial, therapeutic substances. This serum is then injected into the injured joint, temporarily halting the inflammatory cycle and stimulating healing. Generally, four therapeutic injections are derived from a single blood draw and these are commonly injected at one to two week intervals. The therapeutic serum can be stored for up to six months without loss of efficacy. IRAP therapy seems to provide decent anti-inflammatory results without any of the potential adverse effects of intra-articular steroid administration. |
